How to Start Block Work — A Practical Guide

  1. Start With Deep Coordination

Before touching a single block, study and coordinate all drawings — Architectural, MEP, Interior, and Façade.
This step is critical. Most site problems come from missing coordination.

    Example:
In toilet areas, if you’re using concealed tanks, the wall must be thicker than 25 cm to fit the system and maintain acoustic performance.

Always document your coordination and send it to all parties by email. Clear communication protects you later.

    ---

    2. Mark Clearly and Color-Code Walls

Use color coding for each wall thickness.
Don’t rely only on hatching — workers can easily mix up 15 cm and 20 cm walls.
    Clear colors = fewer mistakes.

    ---

    3. Always Build From Grid Lines

Grid lines are your best friend.

Never measure block walls from other walls.
Always measure from axes — that’s how you guarantee accuracy and perfect 90° corners.

    ---

    4. Build the First Layer and Inspect

Lay one layer of blocks, check alignment and measurements, then call for inspection.
Only after approval do you continue.

This step saves days or even weeks of rework.

    ---

    5. Ensure Straightness & Verticality

The most challenging part of block work is keeping walls straight.

    Use:

    Plumb bob

    Plumb fixed from slab

    String line

Your workers must follow these references continuously.

    ---

    6. Check Block Quality

    Cure blocks with water

    Test samples when possible

Simple drop test helps detect weak blocks (not perfect, but practical)

    ---

    7. Manage Lintels, Openings & Levels

Confirm finishing levels with the MEP teams

Fix aluminum/steel guides on walls for windows and doors

Make sure all teams use the same +1.00 m level throughout the building

    ---

    8. Structural Requirements

Walls higher than 3 m or longer than 4 m must include:

    Concrete stiffeners

    Proper lintels

    This prevents cracks and instability.

    ---

    9. Protect Walls From Cracks

Spray water regularly to avoid shrinkage cracks.
Install steel corners where walls meet columns or shear walls — this prevents corner cracking.

    ---

    10. Distribute Materials Properly

Do not allow workers to store all blocks and mortar in one location.
It causes slab deflection and safety risks.

    ---

    11. Keep the Site Clean

A clean site reflects professionalism and helps visitors and consultants see your real work.
It also improves morale and mental well-being.

    ---

    Extra Notes From Experience

    • Safety

PPE, stable scaffolding, and designated cutting areas for dust control.

    • Mortar Mixing

Follow ratios, avoid overmixing, and never add water to expired mortar.

    • Door & Window Coordination

Confirm all opening dimensions with aluminum/carpentry teams early.

    • Practical Tolerances

    Verticality: ±5 mm

    Straightness: ±5 mm

    Level: ±3 mm

    • Toolbox Meetings

Before starting, gather your team and explain wall colors, codes, and levels.

    • Documentation

Daily logs of progress, photos, issues, and decisions create transparency and protect you in disputes.

Block work may look simple, but it requires engineering discipline, technical understanding, and real leadership on site.
A well-coordinated block work phase sets the foundation for the entire project—literally and figuratively.

If you’re a young engineer or a manager leading a project, master these basics. They will save you time, money, and countless headaches.
