How to Start Block Work — A Practical Guide

Block work is one of the most sensitive activities in any project. After years of experience, I realized that successful block work is not just about laying blocks — it is mainly about coordination, accuracy, and planning. Below is a step-by-step method based on real site experience.

  1. Start With Deep Coordination

    Before touching a single block, study and coordinate all drawings — Architectural, MEP, Interior, and Façade.
    This step is critical. Most site problems come from missing coordination.

    Example:
    In toilet areas, if you’re using concealed tanks, the wall must be thicker than 25 cm to fit the system and maintain acoustic performance.

    Always document your coordination and send it to all parties by email. Clear communication protects you later.

    2. Mark Clearly and Color-Code Walls

    Use color coding for each wall thickness.
    Don’t rely only on hatching — workers can easily mix up 15 cm and 20 cm walls.
    Clear colors = fewer mistakes.

    3. Always Build From Grid Lines

    Grid lines are your best friend.

    Never measure block walls from other walls.

    Concrete stiffeners

    Proper lintels
